The speech comprehension system often uses information in the future to affect the perception of previously heard speech sounds. In the two items below, the onset phoneme is identical. But your mind (without conscious recognition) will modify your perception of these sounds to be consistent with the word being said:
"Parakeet" with an ambiguous onset
"Barricade" with an ambiguous onset
